Kindness Journey – Day 126 – Cruel to be Kind

I heard this song the other day. I remember when it first came out back in 1979. I was 15 years old, and the message stuck with me. You must be cruel to be kind at times because if that means you’re being honest with someone, you can’t try to hide the truth.

Some people call this “tough love.” I suppose it is almost the same thing. It will help if you let someone you care about know when you have to draw that line. You can’t support them unconditionally any longer.

It is OK to be honest with someone, even when it hurts a relationship. I have had friendships ended over honesty, but after the initial I regret, I know that I did the right thing. You can’t let someone else pull you down a path you don’t want to go, or you’ve surrendered your autonomy.

Like the song says, “Cruel to be Kind means that I love you.”
