Friends are hard to find. I mean real friends, not simply acquaintances we acquire through the years, but the friends who we can always rely on. The friends who always have our backs and are there when we need them.
John Lennon, one of my heroes, once said “Being honest may not get you a lot of friends but it’ll always get you the right ones.” I think that substituting Kind for Honest also makes this statement true. It goes to the old adage that being true to oneself is always the best course to take.
In the 2 years since I’ve been sick, I’ve found out that I had to finally re-evaluate the people in my life to properly designate “Friend” vs “Acquaintance”. Because everyone’s life is different, this is not a judgement of them. Instead it is a realization of how we have changed as our lives moved in separate directions.
The course of my life is pretty set for the foreseeable future. I’ll keep working to get better, and I’ll keep working to be kinder to everyone, whether they be friend, acquaintance, or someone I just met. That is my destiny because I choose it.
