Kindness Journey – Day 8 – 21 May 2022

Kindness involves learning to love yourself first. Only then can you be genuinely kind to others. While this sounds simple, it really isn’t. We have to start with how we treat ourselves.

Healthy habits are something we should all strive for. Too often we let the world win, and surrender to bad habits. Changing those habits can be almost impossible, but it can be done by first recognizing the harm we do to ourselves.

I smoked for years, first because it was the thing to fo as a kid in the 1970s. Both my parents smoked, everyone around us smoked, it seemed normal. We realized that there was a danger, but it always seemed remote, it always happens to other people. We were wrong.

Smoking shortened my parents’ lives, and I finally managed to quit through vaping. Vaping satisfied the initial need for nicotine and I gradually went to 0 mg of nicotine and stayed there for nearly two years.

Then I succumbed to COPD. The doctors told me that if I’d continued smoking through those years when I vaped that I probably would’ve suffered a massive heart attack and probably died.

Now, nearly 2 years later, I don’t even cape anymore. The damage from smoking has been done. I knew better for years but ignored the best advice and kept on smoking. I wish I had discovered the Kindness lifestyle back then because I’m sure the knowledge that positive change in my life comes from making a positive change within myself first would have helped me kick the habit.

What’s done is done and can’t be changed now. All I can say is don’t wait to embrace Kindness. Do it now. Recognize that it isn’t wrong to live yourself first, that is necessary to achieving Happiness through Kindness.

5 things I’m grateful for today:

  1. My focus on staying positive and not deliberately hurting anyone.
  2. Having the sense to keep my mouth shut about things that used to trigger me.
  3. Being out of debt.
  4. Friends
  5. My love of cooking
