Real Life

Watching the closing arguments in the Derek Chauvin murder trial, and I cannot help but feel for George Floyd. I was diagnosed with COPD last year and my life changed as a result.

I am all too familiar with the feeling of not having enough oxygen. I suffered through terrifying episodes in the hospital when I felt I was going to die from lack of oxygen. The fear was overwhelming, and no amount of reassurance could stop me from panicking and hyperventilating, which only makes things worse.

I played sports when I was younger, I know the feeling of being at the bottom of a pile of bodies and how I struggled to breathe. To imagine a grown man kneeling with his knee on my neck makes me feel sick.

I am disappointed that no one attempted to pull Chsuvin off of George Floyd, but we have to be grateful that some people recorded the event that clearly shows what happened. I would like to think that I would have been the person who attempted to remove Chauvin, but that’s irrelevant now.

Take your phone or your watch and set it for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. Just start the timer and dit quietly and think about how you would feel if a grown man was kneeling on your neck for that time.

Ultimate justice would be for Chauvin to be executed in the same way he killed George Floyd.
